November 19, 2004

Friday 5- 6 PM

WIC Attendees:

Anchorage Chapter members:

Sandy Pratt DOL, Lauri Vandenberg HSS, Barbara Hall HSS, Elaine Hulse DOT,

The first topic revolved about this day’s newspaper headline, a state trooper had been sexually abusing women in the villages he patrolled. We talked about the role of the Women’s Issues Committee in Alaska, and its limit of the ASEA Local 52. We could bond in solidarity with those women, but our committee had no jurisdiction or influence outside of our union.

We discussed the plight of state nurses. They have a letter of agreement within our union contract which they do not appreciate. Also, since the Health Trust insisted on a preferred hospital in Anchorage, the possibility now exists that a state nurse who might herself be hospitalized could possibly have to share a hospital room with a prison inmate. Barbara Hall spoke to us about this and stated that other nurses she has spoken with are very unhappy also.

WIC has heard these complaints in the past and has reinforced their commitment to address this letter of agreement issue.

Guests discussed the difficulties that various departments are having with basic computer networking. The Murkowski administration has introduced new programs that have not solved existing problems. These new programs are not meeting expectations of simplicity and connectivity. There is a lack of compatibility of programs
