New and current stewards turned out for hands-on and diversified steward trainings held during the month of February in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. Along with exercises and roll playing, a lot of information was given in the daylong sessions. According to one new steward, “Steward training has given me the essentials and a clearer view of the steward’s job.” ASEA steward training in Anchorage at Union headquarters.
Some of the topics were: Authority and Responsibility of the Steward; Principles of Labor Law; and Preparing and Taking Up a Case with Management. “This training is helpful and useful,” said a senior steward, “And we want more.” ASEA will offer future trainings for stewards who were unable to attend the February meetings. Also, a more intensive training session to cover advanced steward topics is under development. Utilizing stewards to educate, inform and defend fellow employees will help strengthen our Union. The more a steward can address and resolve workplace issues, the more leadership and expertise our membership enjoys.
