Important Bargaining Information!
PRESS RELEASE For immediate release: April 15, 2004 Point of contact: ASEA Business Manager Jim Duncan, (907) 277-5200 ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 Prepares for Strike over Stalled State Employee Contract Negotiations The Executive Board of the Alaska State Employees Association/AFSCME Local 52 has authorized strike preparations in response to stalled contract negotiations with the Murkowski Administration. This announcement follows a special meeting of the ASEA Executive Board on Tuesday, April 13, to consider a formal request by the union’s Contract Negotiating Committee for a strike authorization vote. ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 President Gordon Glaser said the board recognizes both the significance of a strike and seriousness of the current threat facing the union. “The ASEA Executive Board has approved preparation for a strike authorization vote to ensure that our contract negotiating team has every tool it needs to bargain. We have declared impasse with the Administration over its proposals to underfund employee health care, freeze wages, remove contract language providing for two consecutive days off each week, and interfere in union business,” said Glaser. “The state’s proposal is unfair to our members and we stand united as a union in rejecting those proposals,” he said. ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 represents some 8,000 state employees, approximately half of the state workforce. # # # Press contact: Reber Stein, ASEA Information Officer, (907) 463-4978,
