ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 Women's Committee
Quarterly Report September 2009

Members of the ASEA Executive Board, AFSCME guests, ASEA staff, members and guests,

The results of the Fall 2008 statewide childcare survey initiated by the Women's Committee , revealed that childcare issues are workplace and member issues.  Lack of, location of, costs, and hours of operation all impact the working parent and can have negative impacts on the workplace productivity and work relationships. With these findings, the Women's Committee asked the Contract Negotiating Committee to include childcare as a topic of concern for our union families on their initial statewide survey.  The survey results showed that childcare is a concern in the workplace for parents and non parents and this issue was never at the bottom of list of concerns for the participating members.

The Women's Committee continues to work towards solutions of these issues on behalf of all ASEA members.

We are respectfully submitting our suggested adjustments to the Policy and Procedures as they apply to this committee. As an brief overview, we would like to be addressed as the Women's Committee and strike Issues from the title and all other occurrences.  Additional suggestions are put forward because there has historically been some confusion about the number of persons assigned to the committee and the reference that the AFSCME Women's Advisory Council appointee be the ASEA Women's Committee Chair, which begs the questions, if there is no one appointed to the AFSCME council, can there still be an ASEA committee chair? We would accept that the Chair be the first name put forward for nomination to the AFSCME Women's Advisory Council. These changes are being sent to you electronically along with this report.

Union leadership training and union outreach continue to be important to the development of the membership. We had asked the Presidents if they had members who were interested in attending this training and did not get a response. The Committee has the funds to send 3 members to the Coalition of Labor Union Women's 15th Biennial Convention in October 2009. They will be voting delegates representing ASEA at this CLUW Convention. They will return with new skills in leadership, organizing, and member empowerment that will be shared with all chapters statewide. We hope to encourage more member awareness and participation in union activities.

One of our newest appointees, Tamika Ledbetter of Mat-Su, has accepted a supervisory position and has submit her letter of resignation to the Women's committee. We regretfully accept that resignation and wish her well. Please announce this vacancy so that this committee vacancy can soon be filled.

Thank you for your time and attention to these matters. Respectfully and in Solidarity on behalf of the Women's Issues Committee,

Nadine Lefebvre, Chair
