ASEA/AFSCME LOCAL 52 Women's Issues Committee
Quarterly Report to the Statewide Executive Board SEPTEMBER 2011

Madame President, members of the ASEA Executive Board, ASEA staff, members and guests;

The Women's Issues Committee (WIC) reports for this quarter that our committee has continued to focus on soliciting members to fill all vacant seats and focusing on matters relevant to our members and revitalizing and educating our committee to engage our union women in various areas.

The Women's Issues Committee welcomed a new committee member Michele Aranguiz from Valdez, a new ASEA staff liaison Sharon Dart and Statewide E-board liaison Lynnette Barkowski. We want to thank Toya Winton for her many years of guidance and mentorship to our committee, as she has been instrumental in the great success our committee has become. But with that said, unfortunately, Wendy Parker, a strong union sister is no longer employed with the State and has resigned her position on the WIC.

Since our last report our committee had our annual face-to-face meeting May 25-26, 2011 in Anchorage at our Union headquarters. Our meeting began with everyone introducing themselves and their reasons for being a part of the Women's Issues Committee and what they would like to bring to the table and continue to grow and enhance our committee to serve our members. The majority of our face-to-face focused on committee work to re-establish the purpose and goals of our committee.

We had two speakers, Ms. Ann Secrest with AARP who presented a presentation about, "Why Social Security is so important to Women". Mrs. Karen See, the National President of the Coalition of Union Women (CLUW) was our main speaker, educational trainer and woman's activist advisor. Mrs. See gave us the history of CLUW and presented a power point presentation about new organizing institute material and Women Organizing Women One On One. Our very own Sister Nadine Lefebvre presented a presentation on Older Workers, which is inline with her current position.

Mr. Reber Stein presented a demo of video conferencing and answered questions on how our committee could utilize this new media communication tool. In the same area of communication Business Manager Jim Duncan discussed the Facebook media that will be utilized by the Union.

Our day continued with committee work discussing Resolution 33-Daycare for Convention Delegates and looking forward to working with the Nextwave Committee, preparing to work on resolutions for the upcoming Biennial Convention, preparation for and once again ask for approval from the Statewide E-board to have the WIC Silent Auction that has historically been held at the Biennial Convention, and we had a Meet and Greet at the IBEW Local 1547 to begin to establish a CLUW organization in the State of Alaska to bring all union members together through CLUW.

Our June meeting focused on continuing to work toward the work we established at our face-toface. Discussion of different Chapter picnics around the state. We suspended our meeting for the month of July and reconvened in August to continue working on our face-to-face tasks that will take us up through the Biennial convention. We welcome suggestions and comments from the Statewide E-board and would like to have the opportunity once again to have our WIC Silent Auction at the 14th Biennial Convention.

Thank you for your time and support of our efforts on behalf of the women, families, and all ASEA/AFSCME members in Alaska.

Respectfully, In solidarity
Dawn Bundick, Chair
AFSCME Statewide Women's Issues Committee
