LETTER FROM THE ASEA MIDNIGHT SUN CHAPTER PRESIDENT--SEP. 8, 2017

I would like to thank everyone who attended this years’ Labor Day Parade. The weather was great and we were a force to be seen marching with our new T-shirts. Governor Walker honored us in walking with our group for part of the parade. There were other Legislators and Commissioners onsite greeting members and participating in activities. This year we came strong with an AFSCME/ ASEA float. I would like to extend an invitation to all members to participate in next year’s parade and to submit creative ideas for our next float.

As the fall season takes hold, it signifies that change is in the air. This chapter, indeed all unions are preparing for the numerous challenges expected in the next few months. As we prepare to meet the coming changes, this chapter will continue to reach out to all members to educate and draw awareness to several upcoming events and issues of great importance.

First, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new secretary of the ASEA Fairbanks Office. As time allows please stop by and welcome Suyene Dallman. As she picks up the reigns from Xenia, we offer our support and pledge to assist her as she settles into her new home.

Our *New* internal organizer has hit the pavement running. Sheri Van Horen took part in the Labor Day Parade on Monday. She captured some great footage of the parade, which she will be sharing shortly. Sheri will be visiting our worksites in the near future to discuss building a stronger union and she will be taking photos and your statements on what being a union member means to you. If it is more convenient, please feel free to stop by the ASEA office and meet her.

The MSC E-Board meeting and our Midnight Sun Chapter meeting will be held this month. Dates and reminders shall be provided to every member. These meetings are open to all members and I invite you to attend.

The MSC will be launching a text alert notification system with a focus on news and events of importance to MSC members. Watch your emails in the coming week for details on how to opt into this service.

The next few months will be busy with events such as MSC Officer Elections and Convention Delegate elections. This is the time to look inward and step forward as either a MSC Officer or Convention Delegate or both. More information will be forth coming, as we grow closer to those dates.

The Statewide Executive Board will meet in Sitka on September 11-12, 2017. You may call into the meeting during the members’ comment time beginning at 12:00 each day by dialing (866)-590-5055, and entering participant code 5232670#.

I have kept this topic for last because I would like to leave you with the significance of the U.S. Supreme Court case “Janus v. AFSCME”. The decision of this case will target public sector unions across the nation. Armed with this knowledge, our union is taking steps to educate and prepare our members. This is the primary focus of the internal organizers across the state. Stewards, myself included, are being trained on the Janus case to support and enhance the message being delivered by the internal organizers. If you have not already done so, now is the time to sign the “Maintenance of Membership (MoM) card”. We understand there are questions and concerns about the case and the MoM card and for those reasons, the internal organizers will be reaching out to you. Please be assured that all information provided to the union by its members is kept confidential. Members are encouraged to communicate amongst ourselves, however you are under no requirement to provide a personal email or phone number to anyone including another member, because there is no guarantee that your personal information will be kept confidential or for what purposes that information may be used. For this reason, the internal organizers will not only identify themselves, but will focus their conversations on the Janus case and building a stronger union. I encourage you to speak openly with them.

In conclusion, it has been a pleasure to be of service to you, the members of our chapter and union. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to meet and work with so many of you and I stay committed in my effort to meet every member of the Midnight Sun Chapter. I look forward to addressing your questions and concerns. Your valuable input is what makes this our union. Let’s make it work for each of us.

In Solidarity
