The ASEA shop steward program follows the principles set forth in the ASEA/AFSCME Local 52 Constitution and the AFSCME Constitution, especially regarding the rights of all members to due process and just cause.

ASEA stewards are trained and prepared to perform their duties in a responsible, knowledgeable, and effective manner. All stewards are expected to fulfill their “duty of fair representation” to each and every member, without exception.

Want to be an ASEA Steward? That’s great! Here are the minimum qualifications:

• Be an ASEA member in good standing for a minimum of one year
• Complete the ASEA steward nomination and application form
• Be confirmed by your Chapter Executive Board
• Attend Basic, and then Advanced Steward training on an annual basis

Some things Stewards do:

• Welcome new employees
• Be a resource and representative in the workplace
• Organize coworkers and take collective action
• Communicate with coworkers, union leaders, and management

Some benefits of being a union steward:

• Steward release time for training and working on steward issues
• Seniority during layoffs
